Within the first few weeks of working with us, Lucas has already proven to be a big asset to our work here at Streets of Hope. Having an extra pair of hands, with so much knowledge and experience, has meant that we have been able to increase both our family and street visiting programmes. Street visiting is an important part of our work in monitoring and addressing issues that street children may be facing whilst on the street and also enables us to identify new children who are unaware of our organisation. We believe that the longer a child is on the street, establishing themselves and forming friendships, the harder it will be for them to return home. We therefore try to reach children that are new to the street as quick as possible in order to reconcile them with family and provide the support that they need to facilitate a return home. Typically our street visiting consists of visiting places in town that street children commonly frequent, this includes rubbish dumps and markets where they spend time looking for work and the lake where the children go to wash. Once we find and identify the children we are able to spend time with them addressing their needs and introducing ourselves to new children. Often in addressing their needs we provide food and healthcare where appropriate. Over this last month, through our street visiting, we have registered a further 7 children onto our programme at Streets of Hope and we are now working alongside each of these children, counselling them and their families with the hope of seeing the children return home. |
