When a new child arrives at Hope House we always ask them the same question: 'What is the main thing that you would like Streets of Hope to help you with?' As I was, you may be mistaken in thinking that the number 1 response would be a place to stay, after all surely a bed and the safety and comfort of a home is life changingly important, right?! So I was completely floored on our first day of interviews when 16/16 children all said that above all else they wanted to go to school!! School, Seriously?! Something that in the West is taken completely for granted and seen as a chore but is, for these children, their number one Desire, Privilege and Hope for their future. For children living on the street, many of whom struggle to read or write, they understand and believe that education is the key to giving them the opportunity to change their lives and indeed the world. |
To quench the thirst for education, at Streets of Hope, we have a local teacher (Mwalimu) who comes to Hope House twice a week to teach in Maths, Swahili & English and to help the children to catch up on the education that they have missed whilst on the street. The children love this time to learn and practice their reading and writing in a safe environment, with teaching that is adapted to each of their needs.
Our ultimate goal is to get each of these children back into education whether this is whilst living back home and going to school or attending a boarding school or college. So far we have successfully seen several children return to school and we will keep striving to provide opportunities for more street children in Musoma.
Help us provide these opportunities by donating to our education fund here.
